Sorry for the poor image here - a very crumpled piece of ongoing embroidery. It is slow going as I tend to do a bit and then leave it and then go back to it eventually. I'm not very sure how I feel about this piece. I feel the space at the top of the image would be a chance to embroider something different, so I am thinking on that at the moment. I am also still unsure of what sort of object this will turn out to be. So the the overriding theme on this is "unsure", however I would really like to come to some sort of conclusion on this as there is a lot of work already in it.

Experiment with discharge printing

Another experiment from today, printing with discharge on to some cotton I had bought. This worked well until there was some mishap. It was all fine when it came out of the heat press, so I can only imagine the discolouration happened whilst washing it afterwards. You can just about see where there are some lighter patches which seem to be part of the design. So I don't know what happened there. Perhaps it can be covered up with some sort of embroidery or something.

An experiment from today with pigment and flock on to cotton. The colours are not too accurate in these images as the cotton is a much darker blue. I would have liked to print the heads using proceon dyes but wasn't able to due to the steamer being broken. So I settled with using pigment. The flock came out really well on the ferns.

And today I found some left over heavy brushed cotton from ages ago. So I thought I would print the Ferns and Faces design on to it and see how it turned out. I had this green colour already mixed up and wasn't too keen on it. However the colour worked quite well with the natural tone of the cotton. As expected, some of the print lies on top of some of the fibres on the fabric making it quite fragile. This is something I really like and I think it works well in relation to the passing of time as the image would change as it got more worn. You also get an embossed texture to the image where larger area of colour (the hair) go deeper into the fabric and the areas around these become raised.

At last I got round to taking photos of some other "hair landscapes" I had done a little while ago. I plan to carry on with them, I have just put them to one side at the moment as I concentrate on printing. I have just a week left at ECA so I need to make the most of it in the print room. These are mostly A1 in size and drawn with black ink.

I had a play on Photoshop with an image and came up with this. Not at all happy with it really. I printed it on dyed grey cotton and it was a bit of an experiment for something different. I like how the faces stop being faces in a way and just become part of a larger pattern, but that's it really.

I finally got the fern and faces print done. I printed a few, on calico and on fabric I had dyed different tones of grey. It is hard to tell the different fabrics on these photos but never mind. I like the simplicity of the one colour image. I will work into them a bit with embroidery at a later date I think.

I left the faces out of another print, with the idea being to embroider the faces in later on. This will take quite a while but i think it will prove to be pretty interesting.

A couple more drawings trying to figure out another piece. I took one more photo of another section but it did not turn out, so will get a photo tomorrow. I am aiming to put the heads next to each other with little overlap, not like the drawing below.

I like the fern pattern, but will include it in a different way. I like the connection with nature that this suggests and the simplicity too. More work to be done on it though. I also need to consider the idea of printing this as a repeated image, and the scale in which I would do this. If I stick to a one colour print, perhaps I can play around with design, scale and placing.

I also printed this relatively simple design, with the idea of using embroidery over the top. I have started this but I am unsure of how to carry on with it at present. I am greatly enjoying the embroidery, and think I will pursue this further in more work. Each girl is slightly unfinished, which I also quite like. I am wary of creating an image that looks as if it's looking to be perfect, if that makes any sense. I have photocopied the piece to try and draw onto that and maybe work something out. I may well print some more, with the idea of doing some different work on top of those at a later date. There may be an opportunity to use some text also, but as that is something I am unfamiliar with, I am slightly anxious of doing it.

This is, once again, printed on calico. The think that when I blasted the screen after exposing it I didn't quite blast it enough on one section. I hid this by fully embroidering the inner section, which has the added bonus of giving a different texture (though this is more noticeable through touching it and less so when just looking). I really like the way the image as a whole is quite decorative and created a striking pattern. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it also somehow has quite a communist aesthetic? I also enjoy the grumpy faces a lot.

The same print again, this time on a medium/fine calico. The neutral tone allows for a different colour for the thread outlining the trees. It clashes with the tone of the inner pattern, but I think it works. The rippling in the fabric that the quilting creates gives each girl a slightly different expression.

At last I had some time today to take some pictures of what I have been working on for a while now. This piece is printed on cotton that I dyed a light grey. I then backed it with a piece of fleece and quilted it. The initial idea with this (and subsequent pieces) was to create an item that provided some form of comfort, perhaps a cushion cover even? I am trying to think of what to do, though, and how best such an item would be exhibited. For now I am leaving it as it is, and I am just going to try and get as much printed as possible while I have access to the college facilities.

some lazy posting means that and a late night means these next few posts are a bit hurried. so i will just post some images up, as i have been doing quite a bit of work in the last few weeks, i just haven't found the time to put anything up. this was also made a bit more difficult with mum and dad's ruby wedding anniversary, which meant some careful gift making was in order. so there haven't been quite enough hours in the day...

I also took some time to try quilting this print sample. My idea is for a quilted cushion cover perhaps, following themes of comfort and notions of home. I'm hoping to dye the fabric I print on, perhaps to a light warm-toned grey. I think quilting around the trees helps balance out the image and offers area of simple print with detailed stitching, and areas of detailed print with less stitching. I also chose (not that you can see in the images) a very pale green thread to do my quilting with.

I also finally got a three layer print done recently that I have been working on steadily for a while (with little urgency!). But it's finally something I can experiment with. I went for some brighter colours just as a random trial really on some small samples. The last image is pretty poor as it was taken with rare sunlight streaming in.

I have been struggling to get a screen print done and was having problems with the screen getting blocked. But I finally got it sorted this week and got a couple of good prints done. So I will try and get some more done over the next couple of weeks. The larger image doesn't show the fine detail so well, but the close up is better for that.

I scanned in the drawings i did earlier in the week, and today got round to trying out the heat transfer papers - very fun and also they worked well. They give a really nice smooth even colour, which does not come out as strong as on fabric. This works in my favour I think.

I finally got round to putting a couple images on a screen. I have another image to sort tomorrow. The three will then fit together. These were just test prints on to paper, and there were some places that needed filling. I'm hoping it will print up well tomorrow, all going to plan.

i wanted to get some drawing done today to play with some ideas. i used an older print image for the starting point for this one. it doesn't really work but it do like the hair. i was just thinking about hair growth being a constant in our lives, and this is something i may take further. the triangular blocks were more to do with the idea of shelter and i had wanted to bring in shapes representing home but they became too obvious. so i went with the more abstract shapes and don't think they work, but they could work by them selves in a full circle i think, perhaps with other imagery in the centre? not sure yet though.

i was really pleased with this one though. and i like the way the character is almost feline too. this is something that could work using the ladies i drew before. a series of portraits. the ink works really well too to give the drawings a richness.

Glasgow Print Studio Visit

This post is long overdue - things have been a bit here there and everywhere since before Christmas and I can now finally get back to things. I went to view some prints from the Glasgow Print Studio before Christmas, and it really was well worth the trip. My photos are really not the best though.

This is a huge wood block print by Peter Howson called The Lonely Hero, done in the 80's. I think it measures 2 x A0! so it was pretty hard to photograph, let alone print!

Whilst snowed in today i had a play around with some drawings I had done. I'm thinking along the lines of patterns and cycles, and prefer the more simple ones really - the single layers. I think it may be possible to add to them, but with different imagery, perhaps more simplistic so as not to make it too complicated. I am thinking i would like to get better versions of these photocopied on to A1 cartridge paper using the college Repro Graphics department, and then maybe print other layers on top of them. Just an initial thought from today's activities. Or maybe collage could also work too.

I've been considering working my new drawings into a pattern to work with the printed drawings I had been working on. I just photocopied a drawing to repeat it and see how it would work. I think this could go somewhere, but whether to use the same image repeated or separate images, I'm not quite sure yet.

I think this image works well with the pattern layer behind it. Obviously I placed it on top quickly and didn't bother to work it into the circle properly.

And I think it would work well with both the patterned circles also.

the latest news that i failed to say anything about is that i got some funding for a new project. this is through forth valley councils and the scottish arts council. i cut up a couple of photocopies of a circle drawing and stuck them together to form a spiral, which i think could go somewhere. i think at the moment i plan to get quite a number printed out at some stage to add a real sense of weight. i will try it out with different papers too, and also with fabric perhaps, if i can manage. i seem to have a few ideas at the moment, which seemed good today, but not sure if i will feel the same in a few days. so i'll digest them for a bit and see if they still seem alright.

had a play with my circle drawings today, just cutting them up and photocopying. there are interesting details picked up in the negative copy. not sure if i will take this any further, but it might be possible to have an experiment with them through printing processes.

the third in a series of circular drawings in ink. i think i have had enough of that just for now so am looking to get these printed up in some sort of combination soon - hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so. ordered fabric today, but also want to have a play around on paper also. will try generally trying stuff out with them tomorrow, perhaps in some sort of continuous pattern using all three and cutting them up, shuffling them around etc. just some ideas.

i took a while doing this drawing, and then wasn't too happy. so i photocopied it and played with it, with the idea of creating images that suggest landscapes. i also thought about playing with layering with printing in mind and perhaps using both the positive and negative image in layers. just something to think about. the image with the black background also seems to have things about it that would work as an image on its own. i got the guy in reprographics to copy it onto cartridge paper for me, which turned out to be quite effective.

these were the drawings i did on wednesday. just ink on cartridge paper. the top one is on an A1 sheet so it goes across most of it's width (to give an idea of scale).

i then played around with a broken circle drawing across two sheets of roughly cut A4 cartridge paper. this doesn't further the project in anyway, but was worth trying out.

been doing more drawing this week.

the one below i worked on first when the paper was wet, then let it dry and worked over the top. the results weren't that interesting as you really couldn't see the double layer of drawing.

i then tried doing the marks in pencil and played around with tracing, reversing and mirroring parts of the image.

I also played with bringing patterns together, with also part of the drawing done when wet. this was done on sugar paper.

another drawing over areas of wet paper. this was done on a piece of A1 cartridge paper. the white paper is a good contrast to the black ink. the drawing covers the bottom right quarter of the paper with an area of space around it. again the shapes and tones seem to suggest a landscape, as well as the drawn marks giving an idea of text.

drawings experimenting with wetting areas of the paper before drawing on it with ink. the two top images are of a drawing done on sugar paper, with the work below being on newsprint paper. it seems to create a very delicate effect also suggesting a possible landscape. i like the idea that the outcome becomes unpredictable, and a loss of control in repetitious mark making.

I started my residency at ECA last week and am keen to get drawing and producing work so as to make the most of it all. This is one of the drawings, made using ink on newsprint paper. i am liking the way the ink bleeds slightly and ripples the paper delicately, and am also interested in the reverse side too (last image). things i've been thinking about - repetition, motion, flow, many making a whole, idea of landscape, ideas of labour and simple actions.

over the past few months i have been working on some lino prints. not for any particular project but just because. i had ideas that i had been thinking of for a while, that had just popped in to my brain really. this girl was from a book of old photos of the hebrides. this is just a trial of using a lighter blue than the print below. i prefer the lighter shade but have still to do a proper print. having no press, i have been experimenting with hand burnishing, with inconsistent success. however, using a water based ink proved to be a lot better. and i'm quite liking the almost communist aesthetics.

i'm not so keen on this one. though i do like how the hair turned out. less so, the face. it is also from the same book of photos as the above print . this was just a practice but i'm not sure whether to pursue it and print it properly.

this one really was for fun and to try out some different textures and techniques. i was really happy with the outcome.

so i tried my hand at some lino cuts and have been really encouraged by the outcomes! these two were based on documentary photos of the hebrides taken during the 1950's. i think it is something i will do more of and am taking them with me to the book fair in Glasgow this Friday and Saturday. i always thought i would like to do lino prints but somehow never got round to trying it out - i wish i had found the time earlier!

i am still trying to find a way of balancing my time and finding moments to concentrate on work. the somethink collective is heading to two book fairs in the coming months - leeds and glasgow. a;; of us are having the same struggles but hopefully we can come together for some positive experiences even if collaborating with each other is proving tricky this time around.

i have my migration project with my sister, which is still ongoing. but i have put that to the side for the moment in the aim of creating work to sell at the book fairs. i am also trying to work on some lighter hearted projects, with the possibility of playing with some text, in order to keep the creative juices flowing. so vicky and i are looking to collaborate on a smaller project for the book fairs. we are still in the planning stages but i will update and upload images as soon as i can.

this is just an image of a drawing i did the other day. sometimes i just have a few minutes so i am trying to get into the habit of producing some work in these small moments. it's from a book of photos by werner kissling who took pictures of life in the western isles around 1930-1950.

so it's been a while since i posted last. i have been on the job hunt and not getting very far, and just trying to establish some sort of timetable for myself. i hope i am getting there and in the mean time will try and post some more information on ongoing work. at the moment i am reading this book

and have started a collaborative project with my sister vicky on bird migration. i need to continue researching this and motivate myself! the somethink collective has also booked to participate in two book fairs (march and april) so i will be creating work for those also. i hope to be able to upload more in the next few weeks.

i finally managed to sort out a work space for myself and have started playing around with some ideas i have had for a while now. the small publisher's fair is coming around and i need to sort out some work to sell/show. i started playing with the drawings i had made for the one week loan show at camberwell library in june. i opened them all out so the creases line up. they form a really tactile, chunky pile which can't be folded as the creases suggest, which i find interesting. i like the sculptural quality that the piece gains. it really asks the viewer to play around with it, and this almost creates a number of temporary sculptures as the piece falls one way and then another. I'm also interested in the way, when opened up to view the drawings inside, that the drawings can only be partially viewed unless you lift out the pages above. I like the way this plays with the reading of, or rather the inability to fully read, the information.

so...i received my copy of the Blue Notebook today, complete with my contribution which is pretty exciting. don't know if i can bring myself to read it again quite yet though. the paper should also be included in the next online issue of the Bonefolder, but not sure when that comes out. it will be the fall edition though.

with the move from london up to stirling it's been pretty hectic over the past months. i had not realised that my last post was about the catalogue and i hadn't posted since the show!

the show went well - a very very busy evening. the rest of the week was slower of course but still a good turn out. we had our selling table which did quite well. the catalogues didn't do so well. as suspected, 8 pounds was too much/too weird a price to ask for. we ended up giving them away for free, which we hadn't discussed but which took away the argument about value. once they were available for free, they were quite popular.

after taking down the show, we moved it over to donlon books for the Edit show roland was organising.

not a great picture, but today we were able to put the catalogues together...completed. well, i still have more rubber bands to put around a few of them but they are together with all but one person making the deadline. the couple of people's work that was missing yesterday was put in today and we re-checked the rest and found a few errors that were then sorted out. through a majority vote, the price is set at 8 pounds - to be sold at the private view and the days following. i think it turned out to be a good design that met our needs as a quite disconnected group. and it wasn't too much extra work when we were all really busy and it cost very little to make. so in that respect, it has been a successful exercise. we gave one to the letterpress technician and have a few more to give out as well as receiving 3 each ourselves. the rest (which will be around 200) are for sale.

we finally got together to collate the catalogue yesterday. we had nearly everybody's work in, but as we didn't have it all, we couldn't put it all together. but we did manage to stamp our names on our pages, then put them in neat piles, and then go round and round the table picking up the pages and putting them together. we then had some discussions about little things that needed sorting. a much longer day than anticipated.

managed to get a quick snap of the other book arts exhibition room, though just from one angle. ying was still to add more to hers on the taller black tables.

this is the other piece of work i have in the exhibition. a stack of ink drawings on newsprint nailed in to the wall. it is hung quite high so that the viewer can also look at the underneath and see the rippling of the paper and lightly flick through if they want. this should compliment sarojini's piece in the other room - also out of newsprint and also stapled directly to the wall.

this is what the room i am exhibiting in looked like today. the support work is in with everything as assessment starts tomorrow, but we took out the bags and other stuff. this room is really quite monochrome apart from small areas of colour - welmoet's books, the insides of jane's books and tiny areas on mandy's work. the other room, which i will photograph tomorrow is much more colourful. i think the divide is interesting with some works in both tying the rooms together. as of today at half 5, there was still a lot that needed to be finished, so we'll see tomorrow if that has been done. assessment tomorrow so it will be out of our hands... until the exhibition

I didn't take any photos of the space on friday afternoon. but it was slowly taking shape. lots of hoovering, which caused it to overheat and then nearly catch on fire. had to sprint outside with it. Esther set her work up yesterday. I managed to sort another slide projector out that will hopefully work better than mine was. I have tested it out for a while and it works fine. But i will have a final try with mine on monday with a new carousel that should have arrived by then. I will also take all supporting work in and that will be that...Monday (tomorrow) is the deadline.

this is the space today. it still isn't looking anywhere near done and really hasn't progressed too much in the last few days. i made small changes by covering untidy edges and things. sadly it really doesn't photograph too well. I shall add more drawings to the area in front of the right hand door tomorrow. i will also try and sort out my slide projector situation. it keeps jamming and so this all needs sorting. i still have a few options for that.

we cleared the space of the junk and have been busy installing etc still.i brought the hanging pieces out into the space some more. i am attempting to play with the density of the hanging with swarms and waves in mind. pieces will flow a little down into the space in front of the door. it then becomes thinner as it heads further in to the room and past the beam.

the space is coming along. still lots of rubbish in the middle but the walls are finally looking better. my work is coming along also. i hope to get the gap in the middle done tomorrow so i can then work on moving out to the right. i also want to experiment with some spot lighting next week, as if the day is dull, the lighting in the room is so bad it does not help the piece at all. i may not need them, as certainly when it's sunny, it all looks fine. but best to have them there to play with, just in case...

finally, some old images of our show at the funky monkey at the start of the month. it was not an ideal space, but it gave me the chance to try out the use of slides along side other work. i think it worked quite well together. the slide projector used close to the wall, creates an intimate atmosphere for the viewer. it whispers, rather than shouts that it is projecting, if that makes sense. quite intimate and quiet in nature. it was useful to try it out there, and allowed me to see if it was something i could take forward to the final show...

i have been working i my space. i am not too keen on how the piece looks with the strip lighting on. we will see though. maybe i have to play with some spot lighting. but not sure yet. will continue and then work it out. we started painting boards etc today too. a stressful day! but it didn't take too long. more to do tomorrow though...

setting up for the exhibition now. got into my space this week. started to install as i needed to see how it will work. it went well. i found out i didn't need to hang the trace objects so densely, which is a good thing to find out. i took a photo from up where i will be working - it's quite high. and the space in the room is looking much smaller since the boards went up. will hopefully have time to keep updating the blog as i go along installing...

tired hands lead to blurry images... but here is the piece i have up at camberwell public library at the moment. i placed my folded sugar paper ink drawings in the travel section between the books. i titled the piece - all the water in the world. it is aimed to direct the viewer to have expectations for the content of the work. by placing this work in the travel section it also sways the viewer to take a certain angle when deciphering the work. ideas of mapping, lakes, islands... thought it would be interesting to test out.

there is also the opportunity for the viewer to take one away with them, though this is not stated anywhere.

i have been working out what to submit for the one week loan show at camberwell public library, which we install next week. i am trying to find a way of playing with the books in the library. i folded the sugar paper drawings i have in simple map form. i aim to place these in between travel books and play with use of a title. i think there are about 80 of them at the moment. i believe there is strength in their numbers. still more to work out though...

this is my space for the final show at camberwell. i plan to fill it with my trace-objects suspended with wire. it's an exciting prospect but will take a lot of work! i will attempt to start next week. i will take whatever is on the mezzanine platform off, and make sure the walls etc are clean. then i will start from one side moving over to the next. i aim to fill that space first and then move out towards the beams and more into the space. that is the plan anyway...

i am trying to sort out what i will do for the camberwell arts week show "one week loan" at camberwell library in june. i want to play with placing my work in certain areas to alter people's perceptions of the content and guide the viewer quite specifically. i plan to fold the drawings on sugar paper and put them in between books on the shelves in the travel section. each "map" will have a sticker with typed text on the outside of it relating to the book it is next to. i want to do the same in a section where there are self help books perhaps. so i shall go along tomorrow and have yet another look at the place. i am quite excited about the work, but there is also so much on at the moment that it is all daunting.

this week we had the Pagination exhibition at the Bear. we decided to just have a one night exhibition to cut down on costs and also make more of an event. carolina and i were there all day wednesday, as was keith who set up his piece in the centre of the room. we had some good feedback from people who came. all in all i think it went really well. a really valuable experience.

i experimented with placing different pieces across the room from each other. had some valuable feedback from that also, with people quite able to make connections between the two. i would have liked to have more time to expand my piece out of the corner more. but limitations with time and other commitments made that tricky. the corner piece could be more spaced out without losing the effect, so that is good to know. the ink drawings needed more space, so that more could be used - impact with numbers. but it was useful to experiment with these things and learn from it.

next shows are one at the funky monkey here in camberwell, then camberwell library, and then...the final show. preps going for that are all on track i think...

haven't had a lot of time to upload stuff recently. but have been working hard doing ink drawings. testing them on sugar paper and newsprint paper and wanted to experiment with glueing them on to the wall with wall paper paste. i just did some random ink blobs to test it with. the texture that the ink gives the paper still holds when the tops are glued, which is good.

this week it's our turn to put a show up in the upstairs gallery space. our title is "chapters". there was some trouble with some people only coming later on in the day, so the curation lacks unity really. a shame. my work is at the front of the top image. the pieces sit opposite each other, which works quite well to create some sort of dialogue between them. images are not the best though, sorry! now we just have to look forward to the presentations on wednesday ...

also today i very briefly played around with the tracings. i got some fishing line and some wire. the wire could be interesting, and even the fishing line too. but it is something that needs to be tested with all of them, or quite a few at least to get a better sense of how it works. i actually think the presentation of them using just the pins is very effective. when they are pulled slightly away from the wall they cast shadows on to the wall behind them. i shall have to sort it out on monday for the exhibition that goes along with our presentations, which are on wednesday.

i cut up some of the ink drawings on newsprint today. was very busy in the studio. haven't done them all as only started this afternoon. not sure about them yet. they seem to turn in to fragile yet not precious objects. i'll finish the rest and test them out before i make up my mind about them ...

also today i got out my slide projector. i was just wondering wether i could try some stuff out on it, playing with the idea of temporary work. i just cup up some tracing paper, and on one i drew a blob (the 2nd image) and on the 1st one i cut out a shape and stuck it on. the cut out one is really crisp and satisfying. the projections were just small against the wall. in the 2nd image you can see my fingers in the shot, for scale. i want to experiment with projections, keeping them small to draw the viewer. these are just my first experiments...

i did some more ink drawings from the trace shapes today. i am going to cut them up individually but i wanted to document them first. it is interesting how the ink bleeds onto lower layers/fibers within the paper, as you can see in the bottom image. the colour is not as rich as on the sugar paper. i shall cut them out and see...

in the group crit with the printmakers i felt a bit funny about the comments about the previous ink drawings. they were positive comments but the work seemed to be more creditable because of the more expensive paper and the rich tones the ink makes. it kind of contradicted the way in which i work a little (in some weird way). it bothered me. so i wanted to try them on cheaper paper, which would buckle up a bit and see how they turned out. i did a couple on newsprint paper and then a couple on sugar paper. i was really happy with the results. i will do more of them to see what they look like in a larger number. i may cut out the newsprint ones. i like the fragility.

i experimented some more with some more text. i just took the words relating to something from nature from chapter 1. i cut them out and stuck to them directly on to the wall with tape. not sure how i feel about them. again it was just the idea of producing some work quickly.

i just needed to do some work today and have been having thoughts about how to get in to this 2nd module. i thought to try using some text, so chopped some up out of my book. i thought to entitle it by the it's length but forgot to measure it today.
